Hey everyone…..

I just wanted to say that it’s been a really, really long day.  I’m going to bed early tonight and I have a ton of stuff to share with all of you in the morning.  :-)

Sensory fun at the playground

We took the boys to the playground yesterday and they had a blast. We stayed for about 30 minutes before heading home. Everyone did great job listening and it was a fun way to get some wiggles out.

I enjoyed watching the boys running around.

Something else that playgrounds are good for are sensory input. Lot’s of running, crashing, jumping and being kids. All the climbing builds strength and trying new things builds experience and confidence.

We love the playground and our goal for this summer is to visit one, several days a week.

How’s Gavin doing since returning home 6/14/2013

I wanted to update you as to how Gavin’s been doing since moving back home a few weeks ago. In short, overall he’s doing pretty well.

We’ve had a few tantrums but nothing we couldn’t handle.

One of the biggest issue we are facing I think at this point is Gavin’s lack of maturity.  I know that sounds like a dig on him but that’s not what I mean.

Gavin’s 13 years old on the outside but only about 3 or 4 on the inside.

This essentially makes him a 5’4″,130lb toddler.

It’s very challenging to keep him from hurting himself or someone else, even unintentionally. He’s not very self aware and so he doesn’t recognize how easily he can hurt someone.

One of the other problems and a big reason for most of the restrictions to things like video games, is the fact that Gavin will act out much of what he sees.

This ends up causing lots of problems.  For example, the boys love the show Wipeout. They can watch it and then go do something else.  Gavin on the other hand, will watch it and then try to replicate what he saw on the show. This often times results in someone getting hurt.

The only course of action is to prevent him for watching the show because Gavin does not learn from his mistakes.

Still, Gavin’s doing very well at this point.  We’re quite proud of him and vocalize that frequently along with numerous high-fives.

How the heck is Lizze doing?

I wanted to update you all as to how Lizze is doing.  She was moving around s much better today.  Some parts of her are feeling better but her migraine is worse.

She was a big help today and I’m so grateful for all she managed to get done today.

…and the verdict is: Manic and Psychotic

We just got back from the psychiatrist with Gavin.  The bad news is that Gavin is indeed psychotic.  The bad news continues because he’s also manic as well.

To be completely honest, this wasn’t really unexpected.

We’ve been suspecting that he was manic for a little while now but we’re allowing him time to transition home before pursuing the manic avenue.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with transitioning and has everything to do with his meds needing to be adjusted.  At this point our options are somewhere limited because nothing else has ever worked.

What were doing right now is increasing the Clozapine as that’s both safer and faster than increasing the Lithium.

Now we just wait and see.

We do go back in one month and follow up.

If this doesn’t work or he gets worse, I haven’t a clue where we go from there.

I’m going to remain positive about this change and really hope that it works.

The waiting game

We arrived at Gavin’s 3:05pm appointment with his psychiatrist and apparently he’s running 1 hour behind.

Gavin, Lizze and myself did some running around and now only have about a 15 minute wait left.

It’s actually been kinda nice because the three of us never get to spend time together like this.  Gavin’s been having another awesome day and I’m soooooo proud of him.

God willing, we can keep him at an even keel, especially if we have to adjust his medications.

We’ve had a few bumps in the road but with a few minor adjustments, he’s doing really well.  I’ll let you know what happens.  :-)
