The Wednesday Report: 05/22/2013

Another day and another report from the school as to how Gavin did.  Typically, we’re not dealing with significant behavioral issues, it more health related concerns.

The teachers jot down what they see throughout the day and it comes home in this book.

Yesterday Gavin had a fairly good morning.

He didn’t experience any chest pain or anything like that.  :-) Basically, he’s was just tired and went to sleep.  That’s not uncommon anymore for him and may be made a bit worse by his morning meds.

Unfortunately, this is a tradeoff and while he’s sleepy, he’s not entering into a crisis.

Welcome to our life…..

How about some good news for a change

While it’s true that we go through our share of personal tragedies, on occasion things do work out.  When the star align and something like that happens, I’m always excited to be able to share the good news with all of my readers.

Wednesday was a really stressful day.

I have a meeting tomorrow afternoon that I can’t wait to tell you all about.

However, as far as today went, the stars were definitely aligned.  Let’s begin with the biggest news first.

As you know, we have been fighting to keep our home.  We’ve fallen on hard times and we got behind and dealing with foreclosure.  I got a call from my uncle tonight letting me know that the mortgage company has finally come through.

Basically, we’re not going to lose our home now.  :-)

I’ve been saying that out loud to myself, all night.  It feels so good to hear those words.  It feels even better to be able to be the one saying them. :-)

Things will still be tough and we’ll need all the help we can get but this is such a huge victory and I just want to say thank you to my aunt and uncle for their patience and understanding.

In other news, I’m thrilled to death to be able to share that both Gavin and Elliott will be attending Thursdays Akron Aero’s game with their classmates and a very special guest.  There was a little snafu with seating for the school and basically their wasn’t enough staff to accompany Elliott and Gavin into the peanut free suite during lunch.

Enter the very special guest.

My Dad will be hanging out with Elliott at the game and will escort Elliott to the peanut free zone for lunch.  I’m so excited for all three of them. My Dad was supposed to be working dropped everything to make this work.  If he hadn’t done so, they wouldn’t be able to go.

I have a lunch meeting in Akron at Noon but Lizze has a doctors appointment in the morning and I simply can’t be three places at once.

I would have loved to go but I know that hanging out with Grandpa Gorski will an awesome experience for both the boys and my Dad.  For tomorrow, my place will be taking care of Lizze and Emmett.

My Dad and I are talking about taking the boys to watch bother Cleveland Indians this summer if they have fun at the game.

That would be so much fun. :-)

I love being able to share good news like this whenever I can.  Things like this never happen to us and I’m so grateful to the powers that be for giving a  break.

Ya’ll have a restful night….

I learned an important lesson today

I found myself in a situation today where I wanted to apologize about the way I handled something.  It’s not that I handled it wrong but I should have handled it differently.

Basically, I went after the Akron Aero’s for something that turned out to be a misunderstanding.  The cause appears to have been a mailing error that if I had handled things better, I could have found out, without causing a stink.

The situation has been resolved and I personally spoke to the director of media and public relations on the phone today because I wanted to personally apologize.

The Akron Aero’s are a great organization and we have worked everything out and now more kids will be able to enjoy the game as a result.

The one thing he said to me was that he wished I had just contacted him first.

You know what? He’s absolutely right.

This really bothers me because I don’t typically respond to things half cocked and I always research on my own and make sure to get the facts straight before opening my mouth.

In thinking about this, I realized why I reacted the way that I did, not that it was right.

I think there is a lesson to be learned here, certainly for me but perhaps some of you as well.

When you are a special needs parent, it often feels like everything is a battle in the war to do what’s right by our kids.  I know this to be true because I deal with it all the time and I hear from other parents as well.

It doesn’t seem to matter what aspect of my kids life is in question either. In my experience, at least more often than not, I have to fight for my kids rights.  Things from school, insurance, therapies and just about everything else, is an uphill battle in a world that would otherwise leave my kids behind.

I’m not ashamed to admit that that after years of dealing with things like this, I’m guilty of reacting before giving the party in question a chance to either explain or simply do the right thing.

Truthfully, this doesn’t happen very often but it does happen more than it should.

This is the case with the whole Akron Aero’s thing.  I assumed that dealing with them would be like dealing with everyone else that have been resistant to making accommodations for my kids with various special needs.

In a big way, I did what I’m working so hard to keep the public from doing and that’s making judgements.

It’s really ironic and disappointing that I find myself doing what I’m asking everyone else not to and for that, I’m truly sorry.

There is a lesson here for me and hopefully you can all learn from my mistakes.

That lesson is this.

Not everyone is going to be resistant to working with my kids and our situation.

Assuming that something is going to be an uphill battle, only served to put me even further on the defensive.

I’m going to work really hard to put aside some of my past experiences and give people the benefit  of the doubt before preparing for war.  Of course, this is within reason.

I think this is really important because we don’t want to make enemies out of  what would otherwise be an ally, simply by jumping to conclusions.

The Akron Aero’s have been great about this and this turned out to be a positive learning experience for me.

Thank you @AkronAeros for working with our kids

I wrote a post the other day directed at the Akron Aeros.  After speaking with the school, we had learned that Elliott wouldn’t be able to attend the game on Thursday with his class because the lunch menu had been changed to Peanut butter and Jelly.

As you know, Elliott has food allergies to peanuts and treenuts.   Eing surrounded by people that were ingesting these things would not be a wise move.  After all, they’re kids and kids are messy. :-)

I’m not sure where the miscommunication was but there was clearly a miscommunication.

Apparently, the lunch menu for Education Days has been PB&J for the past 3 seasons.

Regardless of what happened, I want to thank the Akron Aero’s for stepping up and making it possible for my son and others with peanut allergies to attend the game tomorrow by setting up a peanut free zone in the stadium and personally supervising the kids that will be in that zone.

This is so unbelievably kind of them and I truly wish that others out there follow their lead.

Thank you Akron Aero’s for working with our kids.  :-)

Operation Hope: Big Changes

Important note: I’m trying to post this around noon on Wednesday.  Due to our current Internet situation, I’m having trouble uploading anything to the site.  Right now I’m at the mercy of my incredibly slow T mobile data connection  that extremely hit and miss.

This will be in the outbox to post when  the data connection on my phone is stable enough to upload.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for the last few days but I just haven’t found the time or quite frankly, the energy.

I received a phone call from Gavin’s autonomic specialists office at the Cleveland Clinic.  The nurse was returning our call from last week.  Dr.  Moodley was back in the office and so she had a chance to speak with him about everything..

Here’s the long and short of the conversation.

Dr. Moodley agrees that Gavin needs to be seen at Johns Hopkins, in Maryland.

He added that JH has an amazing ataxia clinic.

As I’ve said many, many times, we have the best doctors and they have the best staff.

Dr.  Moodley wants to remain involved with Gavin, especially because he is so rare,  and make sure everything that can be done, is done.

As far as Lizze and I are concerned, we would keep him as Gavin’s primary neurologist because he’s awesome,  he cares and he’s much, much closer to home.

I’m waiting to get ahold of Johns Hopkins and find out the logistics, time frame and if this will even be possible.

I don’t know how we would make this work but I would imagine that a trip out there would cost more than a few hundred dollars.  Granted, at least for us that a lot of money  but it’s a realistic amount and something we would likely be able to figure out.

Besides, when it comes to my children, how could I not go to the ends of the earth for them?
