Ask your questions about being investigated by Child Protective Services

I wanted to open up the floor, create a dialog and encourage you all to ask any questions you may have about our being investigated by Child Protective Services.

We did nothing wrong and therefore have nothing to hide.

The reality is that we are from the only ones this has happened to and if anything that we’ve experienced can help you on your journey, I want to help.

Please feel free to ask your questions, as they relate to being investigated by Child Protective Services.

Testing our resolve

Today we will be implementing a more aggressive approach to safety in our house. We had become a bit lax because things have been going so well.  However, that’s changed and we are pushing forward with reinforcing the rule of no physical contact and only playing within earshot or eyesight.

This is going to be challenging on just about every level but it’s something that has once again become necessary, to ensure everyone’s safety and well being.

Gavin will be cooperative, at least on the surface.

The other boys are going to dislike this, a lot. Unfortunately, this is just something that everyone is going to have to accept.

We are doing what we’ve been advised to do and what’s best for everyone, even if it’s a bit unpleasant.

I don’t know how today is going to go but I do know that our resolve will be tested.  We are going to stick to our guns until a better solution comes along.

Insane in the membrane

The boys have been up since 5am and I’m exhausted.  I have no idea where their insane amount of energy comes from but I want to meet with their dealer and work out a deal.

I’ve had a long night and only a few winks of sleep.

Going into today,  I’m planning on having a very positive experience with my friend Wednesday.  Although I’ll be honest, having so much to do on so little sleep, I’m going just a little bit insane.  Insane in the membrane.

Does Emmett like smores?

I decided to try and surprise the boys by getting the necessary items to make smores. The boys have been asking about this for awhile now and I was finally able to run out and grab what we needed that last time I was at the grocery store.

Emmett’s the one that surprised me the most.

I knew that Gavin and Elliott would tear into their smores without thinking twice about how messy they would get.

Emmett on the other hand,  is much more ridged when it comes to getting dirty.

Having said that, I think it’s pretty clear from the picture below that Emmett stepped outside of his comfort zone for the gooey goodness that is the smores.

#Autism, RAD and Puberty: Managing the issues

We met with Dr. Patti this evening about the whole boundaries issue thing with Gavin. Gavin’s at that age where things are changing and hormones are raging. Factor in his lack of impulse control and sprinkle in a few pinches of RAD, you have a recipe for problems.

The mission tonight was to come up with a clear set of boundaries, guidelines and consequences.

The conversation was very uncomfortable and included words like erections and masterbation. This was very awkward but Dr. Patti was a huge help and we survived. I don’t know how much, if anything, Gavin retained but he handled himself well and didn’t get angry or stress out.

We had to reiterate the house rules and establish a few new ones.

Here’s the long and short of it. Gavin cannot have unsupervised access to his brothers. Because of his lack of impulse control, raging hormones and past history, we have to make sure that everyone is same. These rules aren’t anything new but we needed to refocus on this and reenforce it with Gavin. Any violation of these rules will result in swift action.

We are working with Dr. Patti to create consequences for violations and ways in which to implement them.

This is a really challenging time and the combination of Autism and RAD make it more so. Gavin basically functions on very basic, primal instinct and that makes him a handful on the best of days.

Throw in puberty and you have an explosive combination.

In most cases, it’s very much like Of Mice and Men. There’s not necessarily any ill intent behind his actions but those actions can still be damaging to those around him. On the flip-side, because of some of the other mental health issues, ill intent is a possibility as well.

I’m not afraid to say that I’m really nervous about this new leg of our journey. We love Gavin and want us all to be a family, living together and moving forward. At the same time, we have to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.

How do you folks deal with this time of life in your kids on the Autism spectrum? This is an uncomfortable subject but one that obviously impacts a great many of us.

Hello boundary issues, we meet again

I mentioned earlier that Lizze was having a really bad pain day.  Early this morning, the boys were doing pretty well.  Unfortunately, things have changed since my last post, at least as far as Gavin’s concerned.

Gavin was being inappropriate with his brothers and broke a major, major rule.  This rule revolves around Gavin making physical contact, outside of handshakes and high fives.

This rule was put in place by Dr. Patti and so it’s a necessary evil.

It’s designed to protect the boys and anyone else that Gavin may come in contact with.  As Gavin has issues with boundary issues and impulse control challenges, this rule must be followed.

As a reader, you may think this is mean or cruel but I assure you, I hate it as well and it’s necessary evil.

Because Gavin has a past history of inappropriate physical contact with people in general, including his brothers, we have to very closely monitor there interactions.

Today, he and Elliott were on his bed, under his blanket.

Gavin claims that they were hiding from Emmett.  Nothing happened but the fact that he did this is a major violation and one that will need to be dealt with.
This will be the topic of our appointment with Dr. Patti tonight.

The day is continuing to unravel as the car was acting up again this morning and we had to subsequently cancel OT today for the boys.  This isn’t a huge deal but it does disrupt our routine.

Hopefully, all will be well this evening for our appointment with Dr. Patti. She’s literally just down the street and if we lived in a better area, we could walk.

This is going to be a rough day and one of those that I swear the clocks are moving backwards.

We need to implement some more safety and boundary related rules and guidelines.  I’ll let you know how everything goes tonight, after we have this very awkward conversation with Gavin.

Please keep Lizze in your thoughts and prayers today

Today has only just begun and the Lost and Tired train has already derailed. Lizze is in a great deal of pain this morning so shes back in bed. I believe it’s mostly her migraine that has her down at the moment. She’s basically hiding from the light at this point because she’s very sensitive to daylight……and no, she’s not a vampire.

Lizze was supposed to have therapy this morning but she’s so bad that she canceled.

She lives for these appointments and for her to cancel, means that she’s in really bad shape. She’s taken her meds and is laying down. Hopefully in a few hours, she’ll at least be able to move around again.

If you could all keep her in your thoughts and prayers today, I would really appreciate it. She would never ask for this but I will in her stay.

Thank you so much……..
