#Autism: Spreading awareness by guest speaking

0

As many of you know,  I was a guest speaker at Stark State College tonight for a class of education majors and preschool teachers. The topic was #Autism and this was my very first time public speaking.

If any of you reading this actually sat through my talk,  I apologize.  It was pretty rough as I’m not used to speaking about #Autism in person.  Plus I was really tired from a day spent at More >

#Autism, Animals and Independence

I wanted to share with you all another victory Emmett has experienced since getting his puppy, Bella. Bella is a Boxer puppy and Emmett’s new best friend. Our hope was that she would help to bring Emmett out of himself a little bit and we could continue to make some forward progress. I wanted to empower Emmett with a sense of independence, as well as responsibility. So far, Bella has not only More >

#Autism: How I manage a meltdown and self-injurious behavior

6

The Lost and Tired family is once again struggling with daily meltdowns and ever increasing self-injurious behaviors. This is one of my very least favorite things to deal with because there is no clear cut right or wrong answer. As my son gets older and stronger, the severity of these meltdowns and self-injurious behaviors becomes greater and greater. We have been coping with severe meltdowns and More >

The Lost and Tired family begins a new journey

Do you ever have one of those days where you realize something and it pretty much turns your life upside down? If you have, than you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, trust me when I tell you it sucks. I posted earlier about a conversation I had with Gavin’s teachers this morning. I thought it was very productive and his teachers were very More >

Lunch in the office

Gavin had a rather rough afternoon today at school.  Apparently,  at lunch time,  Gavin became frustrated because he couldn’t find something he wanted to work on.

There was something about him leaving the lunch line to find it.

When he gave up looking,  he had lost his place in line and he had to start over,  which lead to a huge meltdown.  He ended up having to eat in the office today. More >

#Autism: How I manage a meltdown

For many years we dealt with meltdowns in solitude. We didn’t ever let anyone see these because we didn’t think they would understand.  It seemed like something we should keep private. However, all that did was further isolate us from the rest of the world. We would explain to our friends and family about the meltdowns but never allowed them to witness one. Anytime Gavin would get all worked up More >

Another day, another trip to the doctors

Lizze and Emmett are on their way to the pediatrician’s office to get Emmett checked out. He isn’t getting any better and we think he may have strep throat now as well. Whatever he has, has spread to the other boys and that makes three special needs kids, all sick at one time, under the same roof, with a father about to lose his marbles.

Hopefully, he will be able to get some relief and More >

Time to join me and get Fit4Autism

I came up with the idea of “Fit4Autism“ last year. It’s kind of a play on word’s. However, it’s way more then that. As special needs parents we need to be able to take care of our children for as long as possible. The unfortunate truth is that many of us dedicate so much time and energy to our children that we fail to take care of ourselves.

Fit4Autism“ is a challenge I’ve issued to myself and More >

Please say a prayer for Mr. Emmett John

We just heard back from the pediatrician’s office about Emmett.  We were told today,  that on the off chance his fever hits 103°F,  we need to call in.

When they called us back a little bit ago,  they told us to give him some Tylenol on top of the Advil he had over an hour ago.  If his fever doesn’t break in the next 90 minutes,  we have to get him into the ER.

Lizze’s parents are on standby to More >
