#Autism, #Anxiety and #Depression

Well it appears that Elliott is more affected by the death of Lizze’s Aunt than we thought. Whether is the loss itself or the impact he sees that it’s having on his family, I’m not sure.  Perhaps a little of both.

He started freaking out earlier today and when I got him to calm down, he explained through the tears in his eyes, that he doesn’t want to go to school on Thursday.

I asked him why.

image

He told that his best friend hasn’t been at school because he’s been sick.  He doesn’t want to go because he doesn’t know if he’s coming back.

Remember what I said about generalization?

I was afraid this was going to happen and I was trying to avoid this.

When I explained to Elliott and Emmett that Aunt Paula was really sick and sometimes people who are really sick,  well….they don’t always get better. Sometimes they die and go to heaven.

I made it very clear that just because someone gets sick does not mean they are going to die.

One of the things I made sure to do was keep it simple, straight forward and as age appropriate as possible.  Now considering that I’m far from perfect and having never had this talk before, I thought I did pretty well.

Despite my efforts to avoid the boys generalizing the situation and associating someone being sick with death, clearly I came up a day late and a dollar short.

Elliott is worried about Lizze and worried about his friend.  His anxiety level is really high and I’ll give you an example of what I mean.

I asked the boys on the way home from Dr. Patti’s tonight (yes, we had Dr. Patti again), what they wanted to do this summer.  Emmett said that he wanted to build a sand castle.  Next thing I know, Elliott says, “I want to not have to go back to the doctor and have them feed me almonds to see if I’m still allergic.“

The fact that he’s focusing on that tells me just how stressed out he is. That isn’t even something that going to happen this summer.

Depending on how he’s doing in the morning, we may just keep him home and help him to relax.  Spring break starts on Friday anyway.

I’m just worried about him and I figured that maybe some guy time might help to reassure him. I just feel like he’s going through so much and if we take some extra time to help him feel more secure, than so be it.

Taking back #Autism Awareness Month

Earlier I wrote a piece called, Why I’ve lost faith in Autism Awareness Month  and What I’m doing about it.

While I wasn’t sure how my readers would take this, the positive response has been amazing.  Apparently, I’m not the only one that is unhappy with Autism Awareness Month, in its current form and the organizations that use this month to raise money and overlook those they are supposed to be helping.

image

Personally, I would like to see Autism Awareness Month mean something again.  I would like to see, families get the attention, instead of the multimillion dollar companies, whoops……I mean nonprofits.

I would love to see Autism families and adult Autistic’s featured in the newspaper, if they wanted that of course. What better way for people to better understand Autism than from the people who live it every single day. Something like this would make Autism way more personal and therefore more relatable.

Let’s discuss ways we can make good use of Autism Awareness Month.

One of the things I’ve done in the past is speak at a local Universality to a graduate class of education majors.

This was hugely successful and I would encourage anyone with an opportunity to do so, to take advantage of that chance to help the teachers of tomorrow be better prepared and more Autism Aware.

I’ve said this before and I say it again, pay it forward in the name of Autism Awareness. Do something nice for someone and make sure they know that you are doing this in the name of Autism Awareness. People are more receptive when things aren’t being crammed down their throats.

You can even get your Autistic children in on it as well and have them help you do something nice for someone else.  Obviously, this isn’t something that would work from every family but it’s just an idea.

I’ve been wearing my Autism Awareness t – shirts around and that’s created dialogue because people are always approaching me about them.  Some people have questions and others want to tell me about their loved one with Autism.  In my mind, this is a hugely positive thing.

If you would like, you could share your story here on lostandtired.com. I’d love to feature your story here and share it with others. Just shoot me an email if your interested.

There is literally an infinite number of ways to make Autism Awareness Month more effective. Anything we can do to put the spotlight back on the people I stead of the organizations, at least some of them, is a big step in the right direction.

I’d love to hear your ideas on this because your voice is one of the things missing from Autism Awareness Month. :-)

@Lost_and_Tired and @IdolianTab are paying it forward

I wanted to share with you some really cool news in the pay it forward category. I’m trying to have a positive impact on the world, even if it’s one person at a time. It’s important to me that even though we don’t have much of our own, that we still find a way to pay it forward.

Yesterday I was able to do just that, with the help of Idolian.com.

Last night was Math and Literacy Night at Summit Academy, where my kids go to school. During these events the PTA usually has a raffle in order to raise money to help support school functions, provide things for the classrooms and help cover future events like Math and Literacy Night.

Because of Idolian.com’s generosity, I was able to donate a Mini Studio android tablet for the school to raffle off.

To put things mildly, this was an enormous success and drew a huge crowd.

The school was able to pull in a couple hundred dollars and an extremely excited 7 grader was able to leave with a brand new Mini Studio 16 GB, HD Android Tablet by Idolian.com

Summit Academy is a school for kids with #Autism and #ADHD.  Being able to pay it forward  or simply being able to give back to a school that truly does amazing things for my own kids, let alone many others, feels really good.

I’m so grateful to have partnered with such an amazing company like Idolian.com, who is the very definition of paying it forward.

It’s important to remember that paying it forward can really have a positive impact on society.  Paying it forward doesn’t have to cost you anything, in fact, it could be something as simple as a smile.  :-)

Thank you again Idolian.com for helping me to help others.  :-)

The bands back together

Today is Gavin‘s first day back. So far so good.  We actually have all three boys home today because the school is going on a field trip to the roller rink.

Because of how poorly Gavin‘s body coped with the martial arts promotion, roller skating had to be out of the question. It sucks but it’s just not worth the risk right now.

Elliott didn’t want to go roller skating so we kept him home as well.

Lizze and I kinda had to laugh because one would think that roller skating would be very difficult for kids who tend to struggle with coordination already. That’s the case with my boys anyways.

Elliott did push through his fear yesterday and went through with martial arts promotion and even broke a board with his fist.  I’m so proud of him. He also has decided to go forward with the Christmas show as well.

We had no problems letting him skip the roller skating.  A big part of the reason he didn’t want to go was because Gavin couldn’t go.  He wanted to stay home and support his big brother.  I’m okay with that as well.  :-)

I’m going to spend today putting together a very ridged schedule, so Gavin is more or less contained inside a time block and is basically occupied.

I’m also going to focus heavily on the Martial Arts Creed that Gavin must follow as a person practicing the Martial Arts.

Below is a picture of the Martial Arts Creed.  I think it pretty much covers all the bases.  If he stays focused on that, we should do pretty well, hopefully anyway.

On a positive but unrelated note.  My blog is online today.  Blue host seems to have fixed the server issues from yesterday.  Hopefully, they can keep things online going forward…..

Autonomic Crisis: Selling the Drama

Gavin had bloodwork done about an hour or so ago. At this point, he seems to have stabilized enough to be sent home. We’ll know more when the blood work comes back

Thus far, things have been interesting.  Gavin was in full on drama queen mode.

He was screaming and crying for no reason, other than trying to get the attention of the pretty nurses.  Very frustrating on our end because his behavior made things more difficult on everyone.

I missed Elliott’s promotion and Gavin‘s acting like a drama queen.

This has nothing to do with aspergers, autism or overstimulation.. It’s all about getting attention and cresting a scene.  That would be the reactive attachment disorder.

I realize that none of this is his fault per say. However he is responsible for his choices, and quite frankly I’m sick and tired of the drama.  I love Gavin, I always have and always will.  Having said that, I don‘t have to love his behaviors and trust me, I don‘t.

I know that some of you out there can understand how frustrating this type of behavior can be.  My heart goes out to all of you, especially you Carl. If there’s a person on this planet that completely understands its him.

Autonomic Crisis: Waiting to be seen at @AkronChildrens Hospital

We have actually been for awhile now and are still waiting to go back.  It appears that they are pretty busy at the moment

We have to wait for a room with a monitor.

Gavin‘s slowly become more stable as time goes on.  Hopefully we’ll get back there and we can figure out what’s going on.

We had to miss Elliott’s promotion. I saw him as he was going do to the dojo and I let him know that we were going to have to be with Gavin at the hospital and he was really disappointed.  He didn’t want to be doing the promotion in the first place, so this really sucks.

Thankfully my parents are there with Emmett to cheer him on and take pictures.

I friggin hate this.

Autonomic Crisis: Gavin seems to be crashing

We just got home from Gavin‘s martial arts promotion.  Gavin did really well and I will have pictures up when I can.

Right now, we have a problem.  It looks like Gavin is in another autonomic crisis.  After promotion we got spend some time with him in his classroom.  He didn’t look good to me and I asked him to check his heart rate.  He did and it was 50 bpm, standing up.

image

That would explain why he was so shaky and pale.

I had him sit down and take it again.  This time his heart rate shot all the way back up to 138 bpm. That’s almost a 100 bpm difference.

That’s not good at all.

Your body is supposed to compensate when you transition between sitting and standing.  There should be almost no difference or change in your heart rate or blood pressure.

Gavin‘s body is not compensating at all.  Truth be told, I’m really worried.

Despite having moved him out of our house for behavioral reasons, we love him the same.  Nothing will change that.

I’ve placed a call to Dr.  Moodley’s office at the Cleveland Clinic.  He is Gavin‘s autonomic specialist and the goto person for this type of thing.  We are waiting to hear back and find out what he wants us to do.

We aren’t sure if we should take him all the way to Cleveland or bypass Cleveland and go to Akron Children’s Hospital, as it’s much closer.

At the moment, Gavin is still at school.  His teachers are keeping a close eye on him and Gavin insists that he’s okay.  We figured there’s nothing we can do at home that they can’t do at school so we would wait to hear back from the doctor before deciding, what if anything we should do.

I’m at a point to where I want him admitted until they figure out what the hell is going on with him.
His body can’t sustain a heart rate of 135+ bpm indefinitely.  At some point he will crash and we want to figure this out before that happens.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I will keep you all posted, as always.
