Remember the Gummy Bears?

Do you remember the old cartoonThe Gummy BearsRemember how they are bouncing here and there and everywhere?

Elliott and Emmett have been channeling these high flying and extremely energetic bears since about 5 o’clock this morning.  They are in super duper hyper mode and literally bouncing off of everything in sight, including each other.

I’m going on the record as saying that I wish I could have a fraction of their energy. Even a fraction of a fraction would last me awhile.

I have no idea what the heck happened while they were sleeping but holy crap, it’s going to be a really long day.

The world’s most annoying kids shows

My kids love cartoons,  as I did when I was their age.  However,  is it just me,  or the cartoon getting more and more annoying. Maybe I’m just getting old or perhaps,  my tastes have changed.

Anyway,  I was wondering what you think is the world’s most annoying cartoon or kids show?

While we don’t have cable,  we stream Netflix.  This gives the kids access to decades worth of cartoons and kids shows.  Their current obsession is Sonic the Hedgehog.  The cartoon is over 10 years old and has my vote for the most obnoxiously annoying cartoon.

The actions of one can impact another

Tonight we had another Gavin incident.  He was watching TV with Elliott.  They were watching a cartoon and for some reason,  Gavin started chewing on his mattress.

You heard that right.  Chewing on his freaking mattress. I mean really?

Anyway,  after watching Gavin for a bit,  Elliott,  thinking it was funny decided to imitate his big brother.

Elliott came downstairs and told me what happened. Then he burst into tears because he so embarrassed that he had imitated Gavin. He kept saying “I can’t believe did that”.

He just sobbed and sobbed.  I did all I could to comfort him.

Elliott wanted to confront Gavin about how it made him feel to imitate what he saw him doing.
I thought that was really mature of Elliott to want to do that.  I also thought it would benefit,  at least in theory, Gavin by showing him how his actions can affect others.

I then made the mistake of asking Gavin why he would chew on his mattress.

They say,  “never ask a question you don’t want the answer to”.  They are right,  because when Gavin told me he did it because he saw a cartoon character do something similar,  I realized we are going to have to reevaluate Gavin and Netflix.

Now,  Elliott is curled up on the couch,  peacefully sleeping.  I guess we’re camping out again.

Cough drops for lunch

Lizze and I haven’t eaten today.  The morning was just to crazy.  We are in the room with Gavin right now and I think this is going to be a very long day.

On the plus side,  I did find 3 cough drops in my jacket pocket.  They are from last winter but weren’t even sticky :-)

Lizze didn’t want any so more for me :-P

Honestly,  they don’t really make a difference.  I’m so freaking hungry right now.  I’m only typing this because I’m trying to kill time and block out the obnoxious cartoon on the TV right now.

For the record, it’s not working.

Please “study” something else for a change

I have been reading my friend Stuart Duncan’s posts lately about the “studies”. I have to once again, agree with Stuart on this. I have many concerns about SOME of these “studies” and their, perhaps, unintended impact. In my opinion these “studies” are more then just annoying and misleading, they can also be dangerous. Anyone remember a certain ex-medical doctors “study” finding a link between the MMR vaccine and Autism? Look at how profoundly that fraudulent ”study” affected the world as a whole. Even after the study was COMPLETELY debunked and he was PROVEN to be a fraud people still believe it and blindly follow him. Just look at how many people don’t vaccinate their children now because of this. Now we have kids dying from preventable disease, all because of a “study”.

is not only a hot topic but a popular focus for “research studies” lately. The problem I have with these “studies” is that they bring nothing relevant to the table. The last time I checked, the only KNOWN cause for Autism is Fragile X (please correct me if I’m wrong). I realize that it’s human nature to want to understand the mysteries of Autism, especially when the cause or causes are so elusive. However, we have to be responsible about this. There is already enough…..misinformation floating around out there. Do we really need any more? Look, the reality is that if you stare at something long enough your bound to see things that aren’t really there. I mean, honestly, it’s like these researches get together and place random ideas on a dart board. Then they trow the darts to see what the next “link” to will be and set forth to find some way to connect the dots. This is bad for all of us. It reminds me of the episode of South Park, Cartoon Wars. In a nutshell, they are poking fun at the show Family Guy. Basically, they portray the writers on the show Family Guy as a bunch on manatee’s in a giant tank filled with “idea balls”. The manatee’s select the “idea balls” at random and those ideas become the topic of the next episode of Family Guy. Perhaps I’m reaching a bit here but honestly, some of these studies are just as ridiculous.

Why are we focusing ALL our efforts on these often times, bizarre and honestly, pointless studies? The money and questionable brain power behind them could be put to much better use. Here’s a novel idea, how about helping the families out there ALREADY affected by. The families in the trenches right now are many times forgotten. How about diverting some of the processing power behind these “studies” and redirecting it in a way that will actually benefit the community not cause more confusion. Don’t get me wrong, we desperately NEED research but we need QUALITY research and not people just grasping at straws. We don’t know right now what causes Autism and I know that’s frustrating, trust me, my family has been affected more then most. Sometimes the answers don’t present themselves right away but I’m confident that, one day, we will have the answers we are looking for. Until that time comes, there are families out there right now that are struggling. Maybe the brain trusts behind these studies can figure out ways to help the children and families ALREADY affected by Autism. In my opinion, that seems like a much better use of the money and resources.

Again, we need research but we need quality research. We need answers, not more questions. We don’t need studies trying to link your proximity to a highway to increased risks of. Besides, how many people would that actually apply to in real life, compared to the number of kids actually being diagnosed. I mean, is a worldwide problem, what percentage of those people live next to a highway or took Anti-depressants during pregnancy? If you can’t find a link that explains the vast majority of cases then really, whats the point. But hey…this is just my opinion. I’m not a fancy researcher, I’m just a father to 3 kids on the spectrum…what do I know…right.

Gavin Crisis 6/18/2011 UPDATE

Gavin was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital this afternoon, per Dr. R’s orders. You can read the details of why here as I just don’t have the energy left to get into that again right now. Gavin was admitted to the psychiatric floor today about 5pm. When we arrived, we were taken back right away. I got him registered while Lizze sat with him in the room. When I got back Gavin had already gotten a hold of the TV remote and was finding his favorite cartoon. I took the remote and shut off the TV. I explained that we are NOT here to have fun and so there would be NO TV. He was less then thrilled and actually became a bit agitated. I decided it was best to go explain to the staff the “new” approach we were going to be taking this time. I explained that Gavin looks forward to staying here. He thinks it’s a vacation and really enjoys himself. I told them that we could NOT let that happen this time. The staff was VERY supportive and they agreed that if Gavin enjoys being there then we were just going to have to change that. I was afraid we were going to be viewed as bad parents and have issues but to my pleasant surprise we didn’t.

I returned to the room and Gavin immediately asked when they were going to bring him his food. He likes the fact that they “wait” on him and bring him whatever he wants to eat. He was not happy when I told him that there would be no special food delivery. He would have to wait until we figured out what was going on and then he would eat when it was time. After he was seen by the doctor and a few other people he was admitted. We got upstairs and we interviewed again. I again explained that we had to do things this way because of how he views being here. They agreed and said that he would be working most of the time and will NOT be having fun. We told them that as painful as it will be for us (and it will be), we will NOT visit him while he’s there. Gavin look forward to everyone coming up to see him and showering him with attention. That won’t be happening. The next time we’ll see him will be when he is released in a few days. I explained to him that these were all natural consequences for his actions. While this is incredibly difficult to do, it was made a bit easier due to the support we got form the staff on this. I don’t know if we are doing the right things but we have to do something and this, while very difficult, makes the most sense.

I’m not feeling very good about myself right now but it’s honestly a “tough love” kinda thing. As I said before, this needs to be a negative experience with a positive outcome. Please keep Gavin in your prayers because this is going to be difficult for him. Please pray that this has the impact we’re hoping it does.  Looks like Father’s Day is going to be filled with guilt.

A night with Elliott

image

I had fully intended to put Elliott to bed a few hours ago. However, we started to watch some cartoons on Netflix. 3 hours later we are still watching and are 7 episodes in the “Incredible Hulk”. The old ’90s cartoon. Elliott really likes them so I figured we could make a night out of this. We never get to spend time together like this. Lizze is sleeping, as is Gavin and Emmett is at her parents for the night. So what’s it gonna hurt. These are the times that we will remember.
Take every opportunity to make memories.
