Grocery shopping for your child with food allergies

Meeting with the Nutritionist today was very informative.  There is a lot that we are doing right and quite a bit we need to address

Elliott is losing weight and we need to address that.  The problem is that he is anxious, depressed and has aspergers with a plethora of sensory issues.  Getting him to eat on a good day is hard enough.

However, enter a serious food allergy and now meal times become even more of a challenge than they already were..

We hit the grocery store on the way home, armed with knowledge and a wealth of new information.

All I can say at this point is holy crap.

This isn’t going to be easy or cheap. I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed at the moment.

Remember the Gummy Bears?

Do you remember the old cartoonThe Gummy BearsRemember how they are bouncing here and there and everywhere?

Elliott and Emmett have been channeling these high flying and extremely energetic bears since about 5 o’clock this morning.  They are in super duper hyper mode and literally bouncing off of everything in sight, including each other.

I’m going on the record as saying that I wish I could have a fraction of their energy. Even a fraction of a fraction would last me awhile.

I have no idea what the heck happened while they were sleeping but holy crap, it’s going to be a really long day.

Having the crap scared out of you, literally

You know how a pet can have a certain quality? Something that you always associate with them. Well,  we have only had Dean for a few days but it’s become very clear that he has a very special talent.

It turns out that anytime that Dean gets scared, he poops on the floor.

This has happened 3 or 4 times now.

Maggie had Dean sorta cornered behind a piece of furniture this afternoon and once again, had the crap scared out of him, literally.

The other three times, Dean pooped on Lizze:-)

I found my new happy place

Here in Ohio,  the temperature been in the 70′s for the past few days and for the foreseeable future.

I’m outside with the puppy throughout the day and so I started doing yard work. I’m really enjoying the quite time outside, even if it’s just a few minutes at a time.

Since we lost our van and had to replace it,  we will be stuck in this house for the immediate future.  I fully intend to make the best out of a bad situation and make things as pleasant and normal-ish as possible.

Hopefully,  I’ll be able to enlist some of my family and we can get the yard in good enough shape for the boys to play outside.

I’m also hoping to get a fresh coat of paint on the kitchen walls and most of the second floor,  including our bedroom. Hopefully,  this will help me to make lemonade out of the crap load of lemons life has dealt us.  :-)

**Thanks for reading**

Gavin’s EEG

I have to have Gavin at Akron Children’s Hospital in about 5 hours, for his scheduled EEG.

The test isn’t supposed to take very long but holy crap, is that going to an early day or what.

Lizze and Emmett are both under the weather, so they will probably sleep for most of the morning. I really hope this goes well.

Some van-tastic news

I thought I would share some van-tastic news with you.  Well part of me thinks it’s good news and part of me thinks I’m an idiot but here it goes anyways.  :-)

I spoke with my friends at Waterloo Transmission yesterday and explained that I could not pull off the $2, 200 it would take too get the van repaired.  I asked that they do the recall work and I’ll pick it up and park other until tax return.

Then to my surprise,  they offered to stretch things out until tax return.  I’ll pay a couple hundred a month until tax return and then pay it off.  Ironically,  this is basically what happened exactly one year ago with the engine and transmission.

On the plus side,  we will have our van back next week,  on the down side,  this will make the total repair bill for the last year almost $8, 000. When you factor in the price of the van and then divide it by the 12 months we have owned it,  you come up with the average monthly cost to own this piece of crap.

That unholy number is about $750/month.  Now keep in mind that we couldn’t afford the $300-$400 monthly payment on a brand new van,  which is why I bought this one. I sat down and figured all this out the other day and I can honestly say that I’m not sure whether to count this as a win or not.

Either way,  we’ll finally have our van back and not a moment to soon.  Whether or not it will never worth it,  remains to be seen.

Here’s to hoping….  :-)

Appointments out the Ying Yang

Holy crap…  I was just looking over the weeks appointments and so far we have 17 freaking appointments.  The scary thing is that I know there are at least 1 or 2 more for Lizze that haven’t made it to the calendar.

Five of these appointments are out of town at Akron Children’s Hospital.  Elliott has the developmental neurologist and the immunologist on the same day.  Gavin has his 5th antibody infusion on Friday and Gavin and Emmett see the ENT on Wednesday.  Emmett is there for a surgical follow up and Gavin is there for a surgical consult.

Lizze isn’t moving around a whole lot right now so I’ll be escorting everyone through most of the week on my own,  unless she feels better.

The only reason I’m looking forward to this week is so we can put it behind us.  However,  the appointments at Akron Children’s Hospital are significant appointments and will provide us with new information about all three boys…at least hopefully.

The more we can learn about what our boys are experiencing the better equipped we are to help them.

I’m really going to try to keep this blog updated as it helps me to stay grounded.

Thank you all for everything :-)
