A quick tip to help organize your kids tooth brushes

We have adopted the Philips Sonicare E-Series of toothbrushes and have been using them for well over a year and a half.  They are affordable and work very well with kids on the #autism spectrum.

Anyway, we had a problem because we were always removing the brush heads because we shared the bases.

The other day, I accidentally discovered that the brush heads stuck to a can of shaving get cream.

Yes, I know how magnets work.  I just hadn‘t thought of doing this particular thing.

As you can see, the brush head are organized, isolated from each other and easily reachable.  I like the fact that they are just laying around and the kids just like the fact that they actually stick to the side of the can.

I just thought I would share this little trick in case someone could benefit from it.  :-)

Fun fact

This is more of a less fun and more fact thing but I figured I’d share it anyway.

As relaxing as it sounds to have a glass of wine and a bowl of ice cream, it turns out that they really don‘t mix well.

I would suggest either one or the other but not both.  Unless you want to put the breaks on relaxing evening with an upset stomach. Yuck…….

It’s okay to escape for a bit

I never thought I would say this but I miss being carded. Dammit, I feel old.

I ran out to the grocery store tonight to grab some bathroom essentials and at Lizze‘s request, a bottle of wine.

Now, Lizze and I never drink and I mean never drink. We always had too much going on and didn’t want to start self-medicating.

However, our goal after this meeting we had this morning was to reduce our stress levels.

With that said, I picked up a bottle of the very best Giant Eagle had to offer and my $7 budget would allow.  I also picked up a carton of mint chocolate chip ice cream as well.  Although, thinking about this now, I’m not sure that will mix well.

Anyway, Lizze and I are going to have a glass or rather a coffee mug of wine, as we don‘t own any glasses anymore, and watch something on Netflix.

Maybe some of you can understand that sometimes, there is a need to feel normal. A need to just be…..

Does that make sense to anyone?

No one’s getting drunk or anything like that. It just feels nice to sit on the couch with my better half and enjoying a coffee mug of Arbor Mist and watching a cheesy horror movie on TV.

I really feel that it’s okay to want to feelnormal“  every once in awhile.  Who the hell knows what normal is? I know I don‘t.

I just think that it’s a good idea to sometimes take a step back and enjoy some of the finer things in life, like a $6 bottle of fruity wine a bowl of ice cream and a scary movie.

There’s nothing wrong with responsibly escaping all the challenges that life has blessed us with, every now and again. It’s a way to sorta regroup and recharge.  After all, if I burn out, than who’s life would you read about.  ;-)

Stop Relax and Think: Review and Giveaway

Recently I had the unique opportunity to take a look at another, unique board game called Stop, Relax & Think. This game is from Childswork/Childsplay.

This game is geared towards special needs children and focuses on impulsivity.

In this game, active, children with impulse control issues can learn motor

control, skills to help them relax, how to express their feelings as well as problem-solve. The instructions included in this game also provide information about how this game can be used as both a diagnostic and a treatment tool.

The players answer questions that are designed to make them stop and think, hence the game title.

An example of these questions are as follows:

You think you have more and harder chores than your sister. You don‘t think this is fair. What can you do?

You don‘t understand how to do your math homework and no one is around to help.

As with the previous game I tested and reviewed, I don‘t know that this is meant for home use. I can see this doing very well in a more therapeutic environment.

My kids are considered highly intelligent but they couldn’t really get into this game. As the instructions suggest, you really need some type of moderator to facilitate game play and help with the questions.

Having said that, as with my previous review, this game would be fantastic in a school or clinical setting. In fact, we actually donated the last game to our kids speech therapist and we will do the same with this one as well.

Our speech therapist was so excited to receive this game and it’s something she could use in therapy sessions.

In my experience and opinion, using this game in a more therapeutic environment makes way more sense than using this in the home, especially with younger kids like Elliott and Emmett.

That doesn’t mean that your child wouldn’t benefit from this at home. I think that my kids are maybe a little bit to young.

This would benefit the right people, in the right environment. It’s just not for us, in the home environment..

I will be giving one of these games away. Even if you don‘t think you could use this yourself, win this for your school or local therapist. It’s easy to enter and fun to win.

This giveaway will run today, November 27, 2012 through midnight, December 5, 2012.

This would make a great gift for a special needs teacher or therapist. With the holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to snag gifts like this. Besides, who doesn’t like free?

Woke up at 3am to the ice cream man

It’s about 3am and I was just sleeping a few minutes ago.  However,  while I was dreaming,  I started to hear this strange summer sound.

At some point it actually woke me up because I realized what it was.  It was the friggin ice cream man

That right,  I was woke up at 3am in the mother friggin morning to the goddamm ice cream man. I hate Hall of Fame week. I have heard this guy circle the block at least twice now and I swear to God if any of my kids wake up because of this,  I’m probably not going to be in a very good mood.

If anyone is going to wake up, it’ll be Elliott.  He has this weird radar for the ice cream man and hears him long before I do.

I’m not a violent person and I will probably go back to sleep,  while I can.  However, I’m going to dream about dragging that SOB out of his stupid little truck and punching him in the face. Then, perhaps, drive that truck into a tree.

I’m mean really,  it’s 3am in the goddamm morning.

#Autism: Eating Fruits and Veggies

My kids are very picky eaters,  with the exception of Gavin.  Gavin used to be horribly picky but has really made progress over the years and is by far the easiest to feed. I have to give mad props to Gavin for that.  :-)

Elliott and Emmett are a different story all together. They are extremely picky and getting them to eat fruits or veggies is quite often impossible. I have been doing something lately that has really helped.

I mentioned before about banana ice cream but I wanted to update you all as to how this is going.

Basically,  I freeze bananas and strawberries,  blueberries etc. Then I take them and stick them into the blender and let’er rip.

Frozen bananas taste like ice cream and when you add additional fruit it not only adds flavor but also color.  This is important because my kids are sensitive to things like color.  This gives them some control over the outcome and they love it.

They think they are eating ice cream when they are simply eating frozen fruit.  You can even mix in some veggies and they likely won’t notice them.

The good thing about this issue that it’s 100% healthy and 100% whole food.  This is a great way to not only provide your kids with the means to eat healthier but also teaches them to make healthier choices on their own.

I just wanted to share this with you all again because this is still working great for us.

#Autism, imagination and creativity

Emmett has been a busy little bee today. His imagination was clearly in overdrive this morning. This is something I really love about him.  He’s so creative and I’m always amazed at the things he comes up with.

This morning,  he turned Elliott’s carseat onto the cockpit of a rocket ship,  complete with sound effects. He was talking to ground control and everything.

This next picture was taken turning tubby time.  Emmett was playing with his foaming soap and turned himself into an ice cream sunday. I thought this was really cute…
