#Autism, #Anxiety and Medication: Update 12/16/2012

I wanted to update you on how Elliott‘s doing now that he’s off the anti-anxiety medications.

It’s been about a week since Elliott had his last dose of Tenex. He had not been on it for too long, but long enough to know that it wasn’t the right medication for him. It’s really hard to tell if he’s doing better or not but stopping was the right thing to do.

Currently, Elliott is very moody and still anxious but he’s got a great deal on his plate. I don’t know how well any 6 year old would deal with it all. I will say that he does seem to be a bit less stressed at times.

For right now, Elliott‘s life is medication free and we are working on other ways to help him manage everything. We’re doing a lot of art type things like drawing and crafts. He really seems to respond to that.

Right now, that’s where we stand. We’re taking it one day at a time……….

#Autism, Anxiety and Risperdal: 04/04/2012

It’s been a little while since I updated everyone on how Elliott has been doing on Risperdal.  For those of you just tuning in,  Elliott is my 6 year old with Asperger’s and extreme anxiety.

His anxiety had become crippling for him and we need to do something.  We initially tried Zoloft and that was a complete disaster.

After a few weeks of letting the Zoloft clear his system,  we began low dose Risperdal.  The Risperdal has been working pretty well.  We did have to bump him up from the initial dose of .5mg BID to 1mg BID.  He’s handled the medication very well and his anxiety has been significantly reduced.  Unfortunately,  he seems to be experiencing more anxiety lately.

However,  at this point,  his quality of life has improved drastically and so right now,  we’re feeling pretty good about the results.

With his anxiety level decreased,  he is more apt to learn and utilize new coping skills.

So,  at this point,  I would say that the overall experience with Risperdal has been a positive one.

#Autism, Anxiety and Risperdal

Hey folks,  I wanted to update you on how Elliott is doing so far on the Risperdal.  He has had his second dose this morning and seems to be tolerating it very well,  at least thus far.

The reality is that he is on a very low dose,  especially when compared to Gavin.  Gavin maxed out at 8mg/day and it barely took the edge off.  While Elliott, one the other hand, is on .5mg/day.  Gavin was on Risperdal for a very different reason than Elliott is now.

Hopefully,  this will continue to be tolerated well,  and Elliott’s extreme anxiety can be reduced to just anxiety.  I’m realistic about this and am only hoping for improvement and not perfection.

I’ll keep ya’ll posted as time goes on.  :-)

Isn’t #Autism enough?

We have some news that is difficult to process on the Elliott front.  We met with Dr. Reynolds on Monday to discuss other medication options to help manage Elliott’s extreme anxiety.

We discussed Elliott’s rather extreme reaction to the very low dose of Zoloft and our obvious concerns. This is where things got a bit scary. The main concern at this point is bipolar disorder.  This was exactly how Gavin presented years ago.

This was something Lizze and I were afraid of when we experienced his reaction.  Nothing is for sure but it’s something we will have to keep an eye on going forward.

I’ll be totally honest with you.  This scares me to death.  Elliott was my most typical baby now this.  It feels like another loss.  :-(

Tonight Elliott began his new medication,  Risperdal.  He’s on a very low dose,  at least compared to what Gavin was on. We are starting out with .25mg twice a day.

He actually swallowed the pill,  the first time and without any problems.  At least we have that as a positive.

Based on how badly he reacted to Zoloft, we are keeping him home from school so we can keep a close eye on him.  We have already talked to the school and they are aware.

Hopefully,  this will help him?  Hopefully,  we don’t have anywhere near the problems we had with the Zoloft.

Elliott’s Vaccine Reaction: Worried

I’m concerned that Elliott’s arm isn’t getting better.  It seems to be wrapping all the way around his arm.

He had his dose of benedryl and I applied the hydrocortisone cream before he went to bed.  I also make the edges of the inflammation so it’s easier to tell if it’s getting worse and if so,  but how much.

It doesn’t seem to be bothering him to much right now though.  Hopefully,  that’s a good sign.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers today.  I truly appreciate them.  :-)

Should #Autism and Zoloft be mixed?

As with any medication,  results will vary.  Everyone’s mileage will be different. We found that out the hard way with Elliott,  our 5 year old Aspie.

Elliott was started on a very low dose of Zoloft for his extreme anxiety.

Elliott began taking 5 mg/day last week.  He was on it for a total of 3 days before the doctor pulled him off.

Even at the tiny dose,  Elliott had a very negative reaction.

He basically went manic.  He was bouncing off the walls,  had insomnia and rapid mood swings.

While he was only on the meds for 3 days,  it took almost 5 days for his symptoms to subside,  at least for the most part. However,  during that time,  he missed about 4 days of school.

He returned to school yesterday and today.  He had really good days according to his teachers.  That is a huge relief for me.  I was really worried.

I mentioned this the other day but I wanted to bring it up again.

I have heard from so many parents that say their child on the #Autism Spectrum had a very similar reaction.  I don’t know if neuro-typical kids experience a similar reaction or whether or not it’s more common amongst kids on the spectrum.

I was contacted by a few adult Autistics as well.  There experience with Zoloft has been a negative one to say the very least.

I also heard from other parents that say their child with Autism is on Zoloft and it’s been a life saver.

I find it interesting how vastly different everyone’s experience with this particular medication is.

I don’t know if there is any scientific evidence to back this up but I’d be really curious to see what they would find if they looked into it.

Is Zoloft a bad medication?  Absolutely not.  Many,  many people are aided by this medication every single day. I think I would just exercise caution and talk to you doctor before starting your child on Zoloft,  especially if your child is on the Autism Spectrum.

Much like the very nature of Autism,  everyone’s experience with Zoloft -or any medication for that matter- will vary.

Until next time………   :-)

Screw you Zoloft

I don’t know what else to say but screw you Zoloft.  I suppose I could say fuck you Zoloft.

Either way,  I have another sleepless night ahead of me as Elliott’s is still pretty messed up from his recent experience with low dose Zoloft to treat his anxiety.

For the second night in a row,  Elliott won’t go to sleep.  He can’t even sit still or stop talking.  Right now he’s just making weird noises with his hands and his mouth.

We have to call the doctor in the morning because this shouldn’t be happening.

I’m not sure what they can do but something needs to happen.  At this point it looks like he will miss school on Monday as well. He’s barely sleeping and just won’t make it at school as he literally has no impulse control right now.

God help us.  It’s not what he needs right now.  Honestly,  I don’t need it either.

I need my beauty rest…  :-)
