Elliott’s Artwork: Ocean Scene

So Mr. Elliott brought home some very special artwork today, just for Lizze.  He did this while at school today and I’m really liking it.

This is one of my favorites so far I think.

This piece has sea turtles and I love sea turtles.  It also has lots of hearts.  :-) This is a gift to a very special Mommy from a kid who’s all heart.  :-)

You totally rock Elliott.  Yes, I’m a little jealous because I didn’t get one today but I’m glad it went to Lizze cause it brightened her day and I’m sure my turn will come…… :-)

Holy crap, did that just happen?

This morning was a complete disaster.  Elliott had a massive meltdown this morning and came up with every reason imaginable, not to go to school.

He was freaking out on Lizze pretty hard core.

I was barely able to get him out the door.  By the time I did manage to get on our way this morning, we were well past being late.

On the way to school, I may have uncovered the reason for Elliott’s recent reluctance to attend school.

Apparently, there is a new little boy in his class that struggles.  He gets very frustrated and has meltdowns, very loud meltdowns. I don’t know exactly how aggressive these get but I will be talking to his teacher.

Whatever is going on, is scaring Elliott to the point that he doesn’t want to go to school.

My suspicion is that this kid may be triggering a PTSD type of response in Elliott.  It sounds like the loud noise and outbursts are similar to what Gavin did at home for so long.  Hence the PTSD type response.

If this is indeed the case, I’m not sure what we can do about this.

I will speak with the school and get more details as to what is actually happening.

In truth, it wouldn’t take much to trigger a PTSD type response from someone struggling with PTSD type symptoms.  I may also be totally wrong and this has nothing to do with anything.

We see Dr. Patti tonight and I will bring this up with her.

The lighter side of #Autism: Easy Peasy

Mondays are traditionally not good days for the Lost and Tired family.  This holds true today once again.  However, on the lighter, more positive side of things, Elliott got off to school without a problem.

He did a really good job of getting ready without any hassle.

On a day like today, I have to focus on something positive and anytime that Elliott gets ready for school without a problem, is a positive thing.

As Lizze would say, getting Elliott off to school today was easy peasy.

Telogen Effluvium… Ever heard of it?

Elliott’s appointment today went really well.  He was super brave and the only time he really got nervous, was actually pretty funny.

Dr. Handwork put on his latex gloves before checking Elliott’s scalp, which is probably protocol.

As soon as Elliott saw him put the gloves on he panicked. This was the exchange of words between him and I:

Elliott: why did he put the gloves on?

Me:  because he is going to be touching you.

Elliott: (even more panicked than before) where is he going to touch me that he needs to wear gloves?

Everyone began laughing and Dr. Handwork explained that he was wearing gloves so that could look through his hair.  Elliott relaxed again after that.

Right now we are going to just hurry up and wait. Dr.  Handwork thinks that since the hair loss has slowed down, that it’s most likely something called Telogen Effluvium.

Basically, this is hair loss that is secondary to a major illness.  In Elliott’s case, his chronic sinus infection. This is a transient condition, meaning it typically goes away on its own.  This condition is caused when an illness disrupts the body to a point that the hair is affected.

It’s kinda like your lawn turning brown in a drought. As soon as the rain cones back, so does your lawn.

Because of Elliott’s extreme level of anxiety, we’re going to give him some time to recover from these sinus infections and see if the hair loss continues to slow down.

We feel good about this plan.  Elliott has blood work coming up in the near future anyway.  We will just combine everything into one blood draw so that he’s not stuck multiple times.

Dr.  Handwork is a very conservative doctor and we absolutely love him.  He’s part of the always amazing Akron Children’s Hospital. :-)

See how we prepare our kids with #Autism for shots

My family has a large amount of medical issues.  Gavin and Lizze are by far the medically complex but the other boys have their share of health issues as well.

Today we are taking Elliott to the pediatricians office because we’ve noticed that he seems to be losing, what I would consider as an unusual amount of hair.

The main concern right now reside in two categories.

The first is nutritional and the second is immunological.

Elliott has been battling this sinus infection for a few months now and is on his 5th round of antibiotics. His doctor is concerned about there being something wrong with his immunoglobulins.

On the nutritional side of things, Elliott is very hard to feed.

Ever since his allergy to tree nuts surfaced a few months back, his diet has gone down hill rapidly.  Therefore we are concerned about vitamin deficiencies as well.

At the very least, today’s appointment will bring with it, blood work.

Because Elliott is so anxious about this type of thing, we have our blood draw preparedness kit.

It basically consists of Lidocaine cream and two large bandaids, one for each arm. The idea is that the Lidocaine cream will numb the area so that when the blood is drawn, he doesn’t feel it.

Our hope is that this will reduce his anxiety.

This is what we do for Gavin before each infusion, in order to try to reduce his pain as much as possible.

Some may say that we’re babying the boys.

The simple truth is that when your dealing with special needs kids, especially those with Autism or SDP, there is nothing wrong with trying to limit their stimulation. Our kids react so much differently to things like shots or blood draws, than do NT kids.

Look, when I was a kid, I hated shots as well.  However, I got over it and felt better, after the process was over.

Elliott will perseverate about this for a very long time. We will what we need to do to make this as easy for him as possible.

Investigating Elliott’s hair loss

Today’s we will be meeting with Elliott’s pediatrician because there is concern over his hair falling out.  Basically, we are probably going to have to do lab work and check for deficiencies.

They will also check his immunoglobulins because of how many sinus infections he’s had in the last 2 months or so.

We want to make sure to test everything in one shot because Elliott’s not going to do well with the idea of a blood draw.

Please keep him in your thoughts today.  You should probably throw me in there as well because I will be dragging myself to his appointment because Lizze can’t drive.

It’s gonna be a long day.

#Autism and Artwork: A picture for Mommy and Daddy

I wanted to share this picture that Elliott drew for Lizze and myself.  He’s really proud of it and I’m honored to receive such a special gift from him.

I thrilled to be able to share it with you all here.

Please feel free to leave your positive and encouraging comments below.

Elliott is sorta struggling a bit with drawing because Gavin’s been putting his artwork down.  I don’t necessarily think that Gavin’s intention is to insult Elliott.

Basically, Elliott will draw something for his big brother Gavin and when he gives it to him, Gavin will say something like, you need more practice. He’s even said, Elliott if you keep working at it, your next one might be good.

I’ve tried to explain to Elliott that Gavin is just being Gavin and I don’t think that he’s trying to be mean.

Basically, Elliott’s really sensitive about this type of thing now.  I always ask his permission before I share one of his pictures with you folks.

Sometimes, he asks me to share a picture with you all as well.

This was one of those times.  :-)
