Emmett’s Artwork/Bonfire Instructions

We had been talking about cooking hotdogs over a bonfire, all day.  All the boys were excited.  Emmett however, wanted to make sure Daddy built the bonfire correctly, so he illustrated it for me.

In fact, he used crayons and construction paper.  :-)

When we went outside to set everything up, Emmett proudly carried his instructions, confident that they were the only way to have a successful bonfire.

He’s so stinkin’ cute.  :-)

I got a ton of pictures from the sorta successful mini cookout.  I’ll share them in another post. This one is dedicated to Mr. Emmett John.  His artwork deserves it’s own post.  :-)

The Lighter Side of #Autism: My sweet little man

You know something? Despite all the screaming he’s capable of, Emmett is the absolute sweetest 4 year old I know.  Admittedly I’m probably a smidgen biased but what parent isn’t?

Anyway, today Emmett fell asleep on the couch patiently waiting for Elliott to get home from school so they could play together.

He looks so peaceful.  Incredibly uncomfortable but peaceful nonetheless.  :-)

Emmett John, Daddy loves you so very much.  :-)

The Lighter Side of #Autism: Quiet Time

Today is a really bad day for Lizze.  Emmett as usual, is full of energy and loud noises.  Having said that, he was very careful and very quite this morning when he was sitting with his Mommy and Greysha  (the Cat).

99% of the time, Emmett is literally bouncing off the walls and screaming his head off.

However, there are times when he does the most amazing things and can sit quietly with his ailing Mommy and snuggle.  As time goes on, he seems to be able to do this more often.

I know that Lizze really appreciates this and so do I.  :-)

Emmett, I’m so proud of you.

Emmett pulled a dresser over on himself

On Wednesday afternoon, Emmett and Elliott were playing.  All of a sudden we heard this really loud crash.

Elliott came running for help.

When we got there, Emmett was pinned under underneath this dresser/shelf.  Thankfully he wasn’t hurt but he was certainly scared.

Apparently, he was climbing on it and pulled it over on himself.

It was heartbreaking because he just kept apologizing endlessly.  We kept telling him that we weren’t mad at him.  Poor Emmett, he was so upset but thankfully okay.

Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned.  Don’t climb on things furniture.

#Autism and #SPD: Our struggle with clothes

Emmett is going to be 5 years old in the next few months and we are still struggling to keep him clothed. It’s one of those things that sorta make him who he is.
He came home from my parents house yesterday and before I even saw him, I saw signs that he had been through here.

It’s like the moment he arrived home he ran right up to the bathroom and took is clothes off.

For the most part, he will keep his clothes on when he’s at his grandparents house but there are still times when we go to pick him up and he’s running around in his underpants.  :-)

While Emmett is a child with Autism, he’s also dealing with Sensory Processing Dysfunction as well.

Basically, clothes hurt.

One of the biggest challenges for Emmett is wearing shoes and socks.  We can almost never accomplish that feat without a spending a great deal of time and energy.  We have to put on and take off, both his shoes and his socks, countless times tonight them just right.
Even still, he simply tolerates them being on. That’s still a good thing though.

We’ve made some definite strides forward but we’ve also had some setbacks as well. Thankfully, he almost always keeps his underpants on.

That may sound like a funny thing to be thankful for considering……but I have heard from other parents that their child prefers to streak around in his or her naked nethers.

We will run across that on occasion but not too often.

When Emmett was still in occupational therapy, he was doing better.

I would say that 95% of his time is spent in his underpants. If we had to go somewhere, he would get dressed, but the shoes and socks thing would once again be a problem..

For now, I’m really proud of how far he’s come over the past few years.

I know it’s a process and will have its ups and downs along the way.  We have the summer to help him tolerate clothes son that he can survive the school day.

Another Victory

I wanted to share something that I thought was really cool. Emmett’s just wracking up really amazing victories lately.

I snapped a picture of Emmett fixing Bella’s collar this morning.

We have been trying to help Emmett be as independent as possible at a very early age. He’s doing really well and we are quite proud of him.  :-)

Today’s humongous #Autism Victory: The Dentist

I wrote earlier about Emmett’s having to visit the dentist this morning. Admittedly I was a bit wary of how this was going to go.

For starters, I’m indescribably terrified of the dentist, so I wasn’t sure how much of a supportive Daddy I would be today.

Lizze and I were also concerned that because of the need for a cavity fill, it might taint Emmett’s view of the dentist.  Prior to today, Emmett loved going to the dentist. That’s such a huge huge blessing, we didn’t want to ruin that.

I am so incredibly excited to report that if there was a brave Daddy award, I would receive it.

If there was an award for bravest most awesome kid, that would without question go to Emmett John.

I’m so proud of him.  Not once did he flinch or even complain. He ended up needing a root canal and a metal cap.  He did absolutely perfect and I mean, absolutely perfect.

He was such a little trooper and I don’t even have the words to explain how proud of him I am.

When the drilling started, I’m not ashamed to admit, I panicked. Emmett was so brave, he inspired me to be the same.

Dr.  Gerstenmaier, Emmett’s pediatric dentist, specializes in working with special needs kids.  He did such an amazing job with Emmett that Emmett felt perfectly comfortable.

This is such a huge relief and something I’d been dreading all week.  This has been an amazing experience and I’m sooooo proud of Emmett for doing so well.
