Special Needs Parenting: Trying to do better

Lizze and I are working very hard in an attempt to give the boys as normal a life as possible. One of the things we are doing is trying to take the kids to the park a few times a week.  This gets them some exercise and a chance to get those wiggles out.

Tonight,  after Dr.  Pattie’s,  we took the boys to a playground.  While Gavin didn’t get to participate due to behavior reasons,  the other boys had a good time.
It was nice to see them having fun and being kids.  They don’t get to do that enough.  This really makes me feel good to provide this for them. Lizze gets to step outside for a little bit and get some exercise and take pictures of the boys.

This is a really positive thing and I look forward to Gavin being able to participate as well. :-)

Celebrating the end of the school year

We celebrated the end of the school year for both Gavin and Elliott.  Gavin,  I’m extremely proud to say made Honor Roll for the entire year. Amazing job Gavin.

Elliott did just as well and received an award for the Best karate Kick.

I’m so proud of both of them for all there hard work this year. Tonight we celebrated with a little cookout. It was pleasant and everyone had a relatively relaxing evening.  I even burned about 500 calories doing yard work tonight.  I didn’t get to walk but exercise is exercise.

What is Occupational Therapy? (part 9)

What is Occupational Therapy?

Welcome to part 9 of my What is Occupational Therapy, series of posts. This series is meant to help educate my readers as to what Occupational Therapy is all about, more specifically, what Occupational Therapy is for children on the Autism Spectrum or with Sensory Processing Disorder.

These videos are filmed by me, while at Occupational Therapy  with my youngest, Emmett. I hope you find these videos beneficial in some way.  My hope is that they can help you better understand what is meant when you hear someone say, “we have OT today”. I also think this is valuable for those of you with children that are going to be starting OT soon and would do better if they had some idea of what to expect.

Part 9

In this edition, you will see Emmett climbing a rope ladder. This helps to build his upper body strength among other things. Basically, Emmett picks out a stuffed animal friend that he wants to rescue. The friend is placed on the higher rungs of the ladder. Emmett’s mission is to climb the ladder and rescue his friend before crashing to the mats. As the exercise continues, the friend is placed higher and higher on the ladder, forcing Emmett to climb higher in order to rescue it.

This is the first time Emmett has tried this particular exercise. He has always avoided it because it frightened him. However, for some reason, he decided to take it on and he did really well. His favorite part is crashing down to the mat, after rescuing his little friend.

Lights, Camera, Action

Before you watch the video below, please keep something in mind. These sessions are geared for Emmett’s particular needs and may not represent what you child will experience when participating in Occupational Therapy. This should however, give you a much better idea of what to expect during your child’s OT sessions.

Now that you are informed, please enjoy.

What is Occupational Therapy (part 4)

What is Occupational Therapy?

I wanted to share another video from one of Emmett’s Occupational Therapy sessions. This is the Hammock Swing and this is actually the first time Emmett has tolerated this exercise. Basically, this swig provides firm pressure to Emmett’s body. The idea is to eventually get him to lay back in the swing and allow more of his body to feel that firm pressure.  However, we have to go at Emmett’s pace. If we rush him he will simply shut down and resist any further attempts to work with him on these or any other exercises.

Again, please keep in mind that these are geared for Emmett’s personal sensory needs and your experience may be different. I hope this helps to give you a better idea of what Occupational Therapy is like, what kinds of exercises are performed and why. The people that provide these services to our kids in need are absolutely amazing and don’t nearly get enough recognition for all they do to improve the lives of our special needs children.

What is Occupational Therapy? (part 3)

Welcome to part 3 of my What is Occupational Therapy mini-series. Today I’m sharing some more of Emmett’s OT (Occupational Therapy) sessions with you. I hope this helps you to have a little better understanding of some of the things that take place during an OT session. Keep in mind that these sessions are geared for Emmett’s particular sensory needs, so it may be different for your child.

In this video Emmett is doing Bounce and Crash. This helps Emmett with his need for deep pressure or impact type sensory needs. I think this is by far Emmett’s favorite OT exercise.

My goal here is to allow people to experience things that they may not otherwise have a chance to experience. I also want to help parents that may be new to this journey have a better understanding of what some of these therapies are actually like. I truly hope this helps everyone gain a little more insight into the world of special needs parenting.

Working in the yard…

We recently cut down 3 mulberry trees in our back yard do to the destructive nature. For most of the summer our yard is literally buried in berries. I’m talking inches of berries. The berries bring bee’s and other nasties around and the kids simply can’t use the yard. A few weeks ago we took three of them down. I have since chipped them and stacked the lumber. As the yard is finally coming together I have been thinking of ways to make it more usable and relaxing to spend time in. We definitely need a space to go into that allows us to relax and the kids to get some exercise.  would also love to have small get together’s out there.

One of the first things I have to do is get some insect control to make it more “Lizze” friendly. I think I’m going to try “Flies Away: Liquid Fly Trap” created by the late great Billy Mays. I also would love to build so type of playhouse for the kids to play in. Maybe even a new swing set with a slide. I’m hoping to get our fence replaced with some of the funding available for the kids. This will give them a much safer environment to be themselves in and shield them from some of the ignorance in the neighborhood.

In a perfect world I would like to add a deck with a hot tub. I used to install Hot Springs hot tubs and they are amazing and might help out with my back and Lizze’s fibro. While in this perfect world fantasy I would also be shopping for outdoor tv enclosures. If money was no object (and let’s face it, in my fantasy world it wouldn’t be) I would get the “Peerless Industries EL50AH/S Flat Panel Environmental Enclosure” I found at http://electronics.become.com/outdoor-tv-enclosures. It would allow me to mount my 50 in  LG HDTV outside by the hot tub on the deck and keep it safe from the weather. Hanging out on the deck in the shade and playing xbox 360,PS3 just watching tv would be awesome.

I’ll work on the realistic parts first and then maybe someday work on the rest.

Long weekend

We were graced with a snow day yesterday and so this is a very long
weekend for us. Gavin actually did pretty good yesterday. While we
had some issues it was manageable.

Today we were supposed to go to my parents for family pictures. As
usual that didn't work out for us. My wife is still sick and Emmett is
also.

We discovered that gavin does really well with Wii fitness or Wii
Resort. He doesn't do well with typical video games (they tend to
cause rages). These games are about exercise and control over ones
body. Gavin really needs this type of help. We are going to try this
in small spurts at first and see how he does. If nothing else he
sleeps better after wearing himself out.

Lost and Tired
