Hello boundary issues, we meet again

I mentioned earlier that Lizze was having a really bad pain day.  Early this morning, the boys were doing pretty well.  Unfortunately, things have changed since my last post, at least as far as Gavin’s concerned.

Gavin was being inappropriate with his brothers and broke a major, major rule.  This rule revolves around Gavin making physical contact, outside of handshakes and high fives.

This rule was put in place by Dr. Patti and so it’s a necessary evil.

It’s designed to protect the boys and anyone else that Gavin may come in contact with.  As Gavin has issues with boundary issues and impulse control challenges, this rule must be followed.

As a reader, you may think this is mean or cruel but I assure you, I hate it as well and it’s necessary evil.

Because Gavin has a past history of inappropriate physical contact with people in general, including his brothers, we have to very closely monitor there interactions.

Today, he and Elliott were on his bed, under his blanket.

Gavin claims that they were hiding from Emmett.  Nothing happened but the fact that he did this is a major violation and one that will need to be dealt with.
This will be the topic of our appointment with Dr. Patti tonight.

The day is continuing to unravel as the car was acting up again this morning and we had to subsequently cancel OT today for the boys.  This isn’t a huge deal but it does disrupt our routine.

Hopefully, all will be well this evening for our appointment with Dr. Patti. She’s literally just down the street and if we lived in a better area, we could walk.

This is going to be a rough day and one of those that I swear the clocks are moving backwards.

We need to implement some more safety and boundary related rules and guidelines.  I’ll let you know how everything goes tonight, after we have this very awkward conversation with Gavin.

Please keep Lizze in your thoughts and prayers today

Today has only just begun and the Lost and Tired train has already derailed. Lizze is in a great deal of pain this morning so shes back in bed. I believe it’s mostly her migraine that has her down at the moment. She’s basically hiding from the light at this point because she’s very sensitive to daylight……and no, she’s not a vampire.

Lizze was supposed to have therapy this morning but she’s so bad that she canceled.

She lives for these appointments and for her to cancel, means that she’s in really bad shape. She’s taken her meds and is laying down. Hopefully in a few hours, she’ll at least be able to move around again.

If you could all keep her in your thoughts and prayers today, I would really appreciate it. She would never ask for this but I will in her stay.

Thank you so much……..

Emmett’s Amazing Artwork: The Turkey

This evening Emmett was hard at work on a masterpiece. He sat down on the couch and began feverishly drawing.

He was so excited about creating a turkey out of his hand.

Considering that he’s only 4 years old, this is pretty good.  I’m so proud of him and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Today’s Victory: Dealing with Gas

As you may or may not know, our gas was shut off last week. While I am behind, this was a crazy call by Dominion.

Basically, we had our gas turned off about 2 weeks ago and we made the payment needed to get the gas turned back on and our account back on track.

Everything was fine and we were moving forward.

Last week, Dominion shows up and shuts us off again and this time they wanted a large sum of money to get things turned back on.  We simply don’t have it.

This was a very perplexing situation because as of 2 weeks ago, everything was fine and we were moving forward and now all of a sudden it’s not.  It’s so messed up that the guy that came out to shut us off, kept telling is that this wasn’t right.  He called and tried to get this fixed but was told he had to shut us off.

Apparently what happened was that back in January, I paid our bill out of the wrong account and the check got bounced back.

That was totally my fault and was a simple oversight on my part.

That was 7 months ago and I was under the impression that we had fixed everything since then.  I mean as of 2 weeks ago we were brought current on our payment plan and we had gotten our account in good standing.

Anyway, I spent an hour on the phone this afternoon, talking to a customer service representative who agreed that something wasn’t right and this makes no sense.

While we couldn’t get a supervisor on the phone because they were all busy, one is scheduled to call me back within 24 hours.  He said that in his message to the supervisor, he explained everything that happened and how it doesn’t make any sense.

The fact that I was able to get this far is a pretty big victory.  I feel like I stood my ground and was treated with respect.

With any luck, we’ll get this straightened out some time tomorrow.

In reality, considering that I was literally on hold for 45 minutes before getting to speak to someone, while making the call in a house with 3 boys that never leave me alone, this was definitely a victory.

Lizze was able to keep everyone occupied and I was able to deal with what I had to deal with.

This was a team effort and I’m proud of us.

After the day I’ve had……….

Today has been a pretty good day. They don’t happen often but when they do they are appreciated. We managed to get through the day without any major problems. Gavin did pretty well and so did the boys.

Emmett had a bit of a rough time. His struggle with perfection is getting the better of him lately and today was one of those days for him.

I managed to get some writing done and I that’s always a positive thing.

Emmett and I ran some errands and before bed, Gavin and I collected up the trash and recycling and took it out to the curb. We did get some pretty big news though and that sorta set the tone for the day for us.

I received a call back from the social worker in charge of the CPS investigation into Lizze and I. She explained that she had heard from Dr. Patti and she backed us up 110%. I was told that once she gets the records from the Cleveland Clinic and Akron Children’s Hospital, this case will be closed.

That’s huge and I mean huge.

We have been so stressed out over this whole thing and it’s taken a horrible toll on Lizze. We are going to continue being stressed out until it’s officially over. Now we know that progress is being made.

I’d say this was a pretty good day.

#Autism and coping with imperfection: The crinkly cup meltdown

I took Emmett with me today to refill our 5 gallon water jugs.  While we were there, Emmett got a drink from the water cooler. They had paper cups and Emmett thought that was really cool.

However, things went downhill rapidly when he realized that his paper cup became crinkly when it got wet.

It was no longer perfect and he melted down as a result.

image

He was so upset and it went on for over an hour.  I feel so bad for him because he just can’t cope with things being imperfect.  We try so hard to work with him on these issues but only on the rarest of occasions does it actually help and today was not one of those occasions.

This is one of the toughest part of Autism for him, at least at this point.

Do your kids cope with imperfection or does it lead to a meltdown? Have you found a way to help your child through this?

Being investigated by Child Protective Services: Big Update 06/17/2013

I just got off the phone with the social worker in charge of our investigation.  She received very detailed information from Dr. Patti.  This information was very, very helpful in verifying our story that we do in fact take our kids to the doctors.

Dr. Patti said that she has no concerns about out Lizze, myself or the boys, relative to this investigation.

image

The social worker went on to state that once the records are received from the Cleveland Clinic and Akron Children’s Hospital, this case will be closed.

OMG….. This is such good news.

I asked how we could protect ourselves from future spite calls and she suggested speaking with an attorney.

We’ve actually been contacted by some advocacy groups that have offered to help but at this point, I think we would be better served by moving on with our lives. If this person decides to provoke us further with a future spite call to CPS, than that will change the game and Lizze and I will respond accordingly.

At this point, we just want to put this all behind us and move forward.

It will still be awhile before we officially have this case closed but it definitely looks like that’s what’s going to happen.  While I’m not surprised, I’m relieved that the system worked and we didn’t slip through the cracks and have this turn really ugly.
