Should #Autism be cured?

I answered my very first question as an expert, on Dr. Oz’s Sharecare website. For the record, I’m so incredibly honored to be recognized in this fashion for my work in the Autism Community and I hope that this new opportunity allows me to reach out to even more people.

The question that was asked was Should Autism be cured?

First off all, this is a loaded question. Answering it is akin to playing Russian Roulette. No matter how you answer, there’s a bullet in every chamber that has your name written all over it.

With that in mind, I wanted to share my answer and get your thoughts on the subject of  whether or not we should cure Autism.

Should Autism be cured?

This is a really tough question to answer. As a father to 3 boys in various places on the Autism spectrum, I’ve asked myself this question many times.

Autism is a profoundly dynamic disorder, meaning that each and every person with Autism is unique, with a different set of skill sets as well as challenges. Some people are more profoundly impacted by Autism and face a great many challenges and are perhaps, unable to even speak.

Others on the Autism spectrum will face fewer challenges in life.

When it comes to a cure for Autism, the first thing that comes to mind is no.

In my opinion, I don’t see how you could possibly remove something from someone that is so tightly woven into the very fabric of their being. How could you remove the Autism, without removing a huge part of who they are?

Should Autism be cured?

I think the simple answer to this very complicated question is that I don’t think we have the right to make that decision for anyone. Most of my Autistic friends would in fact be insulted by this question because it infers that there is something wrong with them to begin with. I don’t think I could bring myself to make this type of decision for my kids. The risk of losing who they are would be far too great.

I would think that if a cure were available, it would have to be up to the individual person. It’s their life, therefore their decision to make.

As a special needs parent, it breaks my heart to watch my kids struggle at times. Having said that, they always seem to overcome their obstacles. They’re happy and enjoying life. If I were pressed to make decision, I would not “cure” them of what makes them…..them.

If you interested in reading what my other colleagues had to say on the subject, you can hop over to the Sharecare website and read their responses here.

I would encourage you to join the Sharecare website. It’s basically Facebook for health care. Here’s a bit more about it:

Sharecare is a health and wellness social media platform that connects people with top-ranking experts ranging from doctors and specialists to hospitals, healthcare companies and health-conscious consumers. The power behind the site’s unique Q&A format is its collective wisdom, providing health-seeking consumers with answers reflecting multiple expert perspectives—greatly simplifying the search for quality information.

Created by Jeff Arnold and Dr. Mehmet Oz in partnership with Harpo Studios, Sony Pictures Television and Discovery Communications, Sharecare allows people to ask, learn and act upon questions of health and wellness, creating an active community where knowledge is shared and put into practice — simply said, sharing care.

Launched in 2010, Sharecare is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Want a FREE $25 Google Play Store Gift Card?

Big Fish Games is Paying It Forward

Big-Fish-Games-Logo-220x146

Big Fish Games reached out to me this week and wanted to Pay It Forward. Big Fish Games is one of the biggest names in gaming, both mobile and online. They also know how important apps and games can be for people on the #Autism Spectrum and so they wanted to provide one of my readers with a $25 Google Play Gift Card.

This means that the winner will have $25 big ones to spend on any android app(s) or game(s) they see fit.

Please remember to support the companies that are Paying It Forward.

Important Note:

Please keep in mind that I’m working really, really hard to bring these giveaways to you, my more than deserving readers. This is one of the ways that I’m trying to help the community and give back. This is one of the ways that I’m Paying It Forward.

I’m getting a ton of entrees into these giveaways but I’m having a difficult time contacting the winners.

Please remember to check the date that the giveaways end and make sure to provide the correct contact information.

I pay out of pocket for most of the shipping costs and I would like each prize to go to the person who won. However, people are responding to emails or the email address is dead.

You have 24 hours from the point I email you, to respond and accept the prize. I hate having to pass someone up because of the 24 hours expires.

To quote Jerry Maguire, “Help me to help you. Help me to help you….”

Please don’t make me break out the movie quotes again….especially that one. :-)

Thanks,

Rob ;-)

Please make this easier for me

I wanted to let everyone know that I’m not forgetting to announce the winners of my giveaways. As soon as the contest ends, I email the winner.  Sometimes, I don’t hear back within the 24 hours and I have to pick a new winner and try again.

Once I actually get a response, I will them announce the name publicly.

It’s easier that way…

As a reminder, please, please, please check your email.  Please make sure you provide an active email address and if you live in the middle east or any other country outside of the US and Canada, you can’t win.  I’m sorry but those are the rules. .

Paying it Forward can make a difference

I wanted to share with everyone the results of my personal quest to pay it forward. I know that idea of paying it forward may seem silly to some, but I’m here to tell you, it can make a difference.

You’ll notice there are quite a few names on this list. Myself and Idolian worked together on this one as well.
All these organizations payed it forward, in order to benefit the kids at Summit Academy.  :-)

I truly hope to see more of this type of thing happening.  It gives me hope that despite all the horrible things going on in the world around us, there’s still hope for the human race.

Check out my #Autism Awareness Store

I wanted to invite you all to visit by new #Autism Awareness Shop over at CafePress. My reasons for opening this store are many but most importantly, I want to spread Autism Awareness in unique and creative ways. My goal is to start dialogue with those unfamiliar with Autism and also show support for those touched by it as well.

A portion of each sale will come back to me but having said that, it’s not really about the money. Honestly, every little bit helps but all I’m really looking to do is help cover the costs associated with this site, the My Autism Help Forums and the out of pocket shipping costs that go along with my giveaways.

Basically, I want to keep being able to do what I do, without having to take away from my family to do so. Does that make sense?

What I really want to do is be able to provide unique and creative ways to make the world more aware of Autism and maybe even overcome some of the stereotypes. You all know that I work somewhere outside of the box and my approach to everything is kinda unique. I feel that this approach will work outside of this site as well.

Check out my t-shirts at the shop and you will see sayings like: I love someone with Autism or Ask Me About Autism. There are many more coming but these should help get the conversation started.

Autism Awareness can begin with a simple question. That question can lead to a conversation and that conversation can lead to Autism Awareness.

Please keep in mind that this store is really new and the collection will continue to grow. I’m even open to your ideas as well.

Is there a statement about Autism that you would like to make? Let me know and I’ll try to help with that.

I’m also going to work with CafePress on more giveaways in the future as well. This you allow my readers the opportunity to get these items at no cost. Who doesn’t like free?

Thank you again for all your continued love and support. I’m really hoping that this will help me to continue to help others. :-)

Is the end of the world today….or what?

I have been following this whole Mayan Calander thing with fascination. It think is so interesting and honestly, really sad that so many people are freaking out over something that happened so long ago.

So their calander ran out, big deal.  Ours runs out every year.  Does that mean that the world will be ending? Of course not.

image

Forgive me for saying this but there are really some…..um…interesting people out there.

I’ve read about people on a mountain in France, waiting for the mother ship to come and take them away. Really? I’ve also heard about people building panic rooms or fallout shelters in order to survive the pending apocalypse that’s what, like 12 hours away??

I’m of the mind frame that anything could happen. However, whatever does happen, probably has much more to do with what we’ve done as a modern society and nothing to do with anything the ancient Mayan’s ever said.

Something that I try to do and often fall short of is live each days as if it were my last.  By doing that, I figure I have my bases covered.  I never leave anything unsaid and I always, always, always make sure my family knows how much I love them.

For the Lost and Tired family, it’s business as usual. We’ll probably all hang out as a family today and have a nice dinner. I’ll make sure to say how much I love each of them today as well, ya know, just in case.  ;-)

What are your plans for this possibly but very unlikely apocalyptic evening?
