#Autism and the Grapes of Wrath

Elliott did stay home from school today because of his fever last night,  however,  he’s seems to be doing just fine now.  He helped me clean out Emmett’s aquarium before lunch.

I made Elliott chicken nuggets with whole grains breading.  He had some grapes and a glass of chocolate soy milk.

This is about as adventurous as he gets when it comes to eating.  He ate everything accept all the grapes.  He loves grapes so I wasn’t sure what the problem was.  I told him to just eat 5 grapes and we’ll save the rest for another time.

When he came down to the last 3 grapes he really began to struggle.  When I asked him what was wrong,  he explained that the holes were to big. I was like,  what do you mean the holes are to big?

He pointed out that on the right had a bigger hole.  I explained that it was a bigger grape and so it had a bigger hole.  It made no difference. In fact it helped him to realize that the holes on the other 2 grapes weren’t the same size.  He wouldn’t eat any of them now.

Do you know how hard it it to get a child with Autism to eat a balanced meal?  In my experience,  there is always something wrong with whatever we offer.  My kids struggle with the color,  texture,  smell and placement of their food.  Nothing can touch and sometimes we have to use separate plates for each item.

I would love to make breakfast,  lunch or dinner and just have them eat it,  without any drama.

Sigh…I’m sooooo tired…

6th Antibody Infusion: IV placed

Gavin’s IV is finally in ace and the IgG infusion has begun.  The whole process takes a few hours but as time goes by,  and his body continues to tolerate the infusion,  the process will be sped up.

He did pretty well with the IV placement. He repeatedly asked the same questions over and over again but he’s didn’t scream.

They drew blood so that he doesn’t need a second needle poker on Monday in order to refill his Clozapine prescription.

He’s back to playing Phineas and Ferb on the PS3 and has phased everyone,  and everything,  out.

Now we just wait…….

The “Gavin effect”

Gavin has been challenging for most of his life. If you read back far enough you will see that we have tried to shield the other kids as much as possible from his behaviors. There have been times we considered placement in order to ensure the best interests of Elliott and more recently Emmett. Things did improve eventually.

Today we find ourselves in that same place again. As I have shared many times here, Gavin likes to self-injure. Every time he is questioned about something or makes a mistake he hits himself. We have very aggressively tried to quash this because we COULD NOT ALLOW this spread to the other boys. Well despite our best efforts it has spread. Elliott has now begun (for about a week or so now) bending his fingers back just like Gavin does. He also kicks and hits himself when frustrated or angry. It seems almost compulsory. His anxiety is absolutely through the roof. I’m trying to carefully discourage this behavior because he is going to hurt himself.

Elliott worships Gavin and so he models Gavin’s behavior. This is a real problem because Gavin’s behavior is inappropriate more often then not. We are going to have to do something. The question is what are we going to do.

Lizze’s parents have kindly offered to take him for a little while. We had decided not to do that due to Gavin’s deteriorating condition. We are in the best place to monitor his new meds and current state. However, in light of these recent changes in his over all impact on the kids (namely Elliott) we are going to have to reevaluate that decision…and sooner then later.
