#Autism and the potty woes

I very distinctly remember sharing the news when Emmett was finally potty trained.  Diapers were an absolute nightmare for us.  He refused to wear anything but the Cookie Monster diapers and it was a huge,  huge expense for many years.

Since being potty trained for about the last year or years and a half,  he’s done really good.  I can’t actually remember him having any accidents.

However,  for the last month or so,  Emmett has been afraid to go potty by himself. I have to stand in the bathroom so he’s not alone. He’s also “unable”  to put his underpants back on after he’s done. It’s more like unwilling to put his underpants back on.

I don’t know what happened.  This seems to have come out of nowhere.  I feel like he’s taking a few steps backwards.

Being that he’s Autistic,  there could be any number of reasons that I would never see myself. Even though he’s talking much better,  he doesn’t say what’s wrong, just that he wants me to wait with him.

Maybe it’s just a phase?  Maybe something happened to him while in the bathroom that scared him and this is the result?

How many of you all see this type of 2 teos forward,  or even step back kinda thing with your child on the ASD spectrum?  Does it seem to be more of a phase for you or do you find that it’s something else all together?.

I could really use some advice because this is starting to drive me a little batty.  However,  more importantly,  I want to make sure this is not a sign of regression and instead just a hickup along the way.

The reason I worry is because this is the age Gavin was when he began regressing.  I’m terrified of this happening to Emmett

Emmett’s therapist says not to worry about it and just work through it with him,  which we do.  However,  if you have even known the absolute heartache of losing a child to regression,  you will understand my fears.

Yeah, it’s that kind of day

First of all, let me say that I know it could be much worse.  However,  as this day just keeps going on and on,  I able to cope with less and less.

A little while ago,  Emmett,  who was supposed to be going potty,  decided that a change of plans was needed.

Emmett found a can of Lizze’s shaving cream,  some hand sanitizer and tooth paste.  He took all those ingredients and mixed them and subsequently applied the plaster like paste into his hair.

This is the part that I know could have been worse and thankfully we don’t have to deal with other, far less pleasant things being put into my child’s hair.  My heart goes out to all of you that are struggling with that. :-(

I think that Emmett has this sixth sense.  He has the ability to know when I’m already straddling on the brink of insanity.  Instead of adjusting hosting behavior to give Daddy a break,  he instead,  continues poking the bear.  He’s lucky he’s so stinking cute and that I just love him to pieces.

I need bedtime to be like,  right now.

#Autism: Worries of regression

I live in constant fear of my kids regressing. I experienced that horror with Gavin when he was about 4 years old. Over the years,  Gavin continues to regress. Out of nowhere,  he would lose a skill he had already mastered but would usually gain it back or was able to relearn it.

However,  anymore,  Gavin just loses the skill and simply doesn’t recover.

With that being said,  I extremely worried about Emmett because he’s at the same age that we lost Gavin and he seems to be slipping.

This is just the latest example of Emmett regressing.  Emmett has been completely potty trained for quite some time now.  However,  until about 6 months ago,  Emmett wouldn’t have to strip naked to go potty.  He moved past that and we haven’t repeated that behavior until recently.

Once again,  Emmett must strip all of his clothes off before going potty. Maybe this is just a weird phase and nothing to worry about. However, the general consensus is that he’s losing traction and slipping backwards.

His behaviors are regressing as well.  He is once again biting and becoming very aggressive,  even with Bella.

As much as I try not to assume anything,  it’s really hard not to be terrified at this point. But like I said earlier, it could be nothing more than a weird phase. Somehow,  I don’t find that very comforting.

1 step forward 2 steps back

One of the things that I deal with as a special needs parent is the whole 1 step forward 2 steps back thing. The Lost and Tired family is no stranger to this.

Emmett is potty trained,  thank God,  and has been for awhile.  However,  in recent months his potty routine has changed.

He used to have to take all of his clothes off before going potty. He would then flush,  wash his hands and get dressed or ask for help to get dressed. However,  now he will keep his clothes on,  but won’t flush or wash his hands.

It seems like every time I walked into the bathroom,  I find a present,  left behind by Emmett.

I’m grateful that we have come this far and I’m extremely proud of Emmett as well.  But,  if I to be honest,  I have to admit that these steps back really suck.

I have tried visual reminders and nothing. If I verbally remind him then he freaks out.  One more thing to figure out.  Don’t get me wrong,  I’m don’t mean to complain because I know it could be worse.  But even knowing that,  it’s still frustrating….

Please STOP flushing things down the toilet

Someone please tell me what is so goddamn interesting about flushing things down the toilet.  My things I’m referring to toys,  toilet paper rolls ect.

I realize the insanity of asking this question in the first place but I just spent the better part of the day uncloging the only toilet in the house because Emmett decided to flush several toilet paper rolls down the toilet.

I went through two plunger to fix it.

I know why he finds it interesting,  but I wish he didn’t.  He likes watching the things “zoom down the potty”,  his words,  not mine.

I don’t know how typical kids would react to this but when I explained that if he had to go potty,  he would have to use an alternative location,  he refused.

As far as he’s concerned,  the only place you go potty is in the potty.

It’s only Monday. OMG,  what does the rest of the week have in store?

Finger painting on the bathroom wall

Emmett had a bath this morning.  Not that big of a deal except for the story leading up to the bath.

Emmett woke up from his nap and had to go potty.  He went potty and tried to clean himself up. The keyword is try. I applaud his attempts at independence but that attempt was very messy and required the use of a carpet scrubber,  clean clothes and the aformentioned bath.

He was nothing the mood for a bath and the sensory bombs wenwoukd normally use weren’t an option today.  However,  I brought out the next best thing,  shaving cream.  :-)

I spray shaving cream on the wall and Emmett finger paints.  What did you think I was referring to when I said fingers painting in the bathroom?

Anyway,  he loves writing his letters and numbers in the shaving cream and then wipe them away and start over.

It’s the little things in life I guess…..  :-)

6th Antibody Infusion: Potty break

Gavin is well into his 6th Antibody Infusion today.  He decided that now was a good time to need to to go potty.

In the past week have had accidents while receiving the infusion so I didn’t want to take any chances.

Since he was hooked up to the IV,  it made things a bit more challenging but Gavin did great.  He even pushed the IV poll all by himself,  without getting tangled or knocking it over.  :-)

Hopefully,  that will be the last trip to the bathroom today,  at least until he’s done.  :-)
