Kuts 4 Kids: #Autism Friendly Haircuts

Whenever I come across a business that works very well with the Autism community, I like to shine the spotlight on them because quite frankly, they deserve it.

Kuts 4 Kids is the latest to receive this recognition for working well with my kids on the Autism spectrum.

As many of you are aware of, taking a child with Autism to get a haircut is very often a traumatic experience for all involved.

When it comes to the Lost and Tired family, our experience with haircuts is hit or miss.  Sometimes the boys do really, really well. Others times, especially with Emmett in particular, we struggle and very often won’t even make it out of the car.

We have been going to Kuts 4 Kids for a few years now and all I can do is sing their praises.

The boys do pretty well there.  Jessica and Jodi are so incredibly patient and seem to find a way to work with our boys so they feel comfortable with them inside their personal space.

The boys get to pick a special seat and watch cartoons while they get their hair cut, which is a great distraction.

While not every child with Autism is subject to having a different experience at Kuts 4 Kids, they will be treated with kindness, compassion and most of all, respect.

Kuts 4 Kids is our home for haircuts because the kids just do much better there, than the other places we’ve tried over the years. I would encourage you all, if you live in the Akron/Canton, Ohio area, to give them a try.
As a special needs parent, we have to sometimes look for awhile to find something that works for our kids.  If you can manage a less stressful haircut, wouldn’t that just be awesome.  It works for us.  :-)

How do you unwind after a day full of #Autism?

There are days where we experience Autism in full force.  On these days, the boys are likely having a ton of difficulty with things.  They may be overstimulated or struggling with more sensory issues than normal.

Part of what’s so overwhelming for us as parents is the screaming and inability to really help them through what they are experiencing.

These are the days where I may have to remake breakfast, lunch and dinner, several times because someone is refusing to eat because something is wrong with their chicken nuggets.

Lizze and I refer to these days as a day full of Autism.

We don’t mean it in a bad way.  It’s just one of those days when the boys will experience more of the outward symptoms and are much more challenging to manage.

After the boys are safely away in their dreams, Lizze and I try to unwind.

Depending on how bad the day was, I may sneak off to Walgreens for some cheap ice cream or Lizze will fall asleep while snuggling with me on the couch.

It’s nice to have some downtime. It helps to keep us from going crazy and it’s also nice to spend time with my best friend, even if she’s sleeping next to me.  :-)

What do you do to unwind after a rough day?

Today’s #Autism Victory: Letting Mommy and Daddy get out

I already posted this picture on the Lost and Tired community page on Facebook but I wanted to share the victory with all of you as well.

Lizze and I went walking this afternoon.  I talked about that earlier.

What I neglected to mention, was where the kids were at the time.  Well, the boys were hanging out with my Mom for a little while yesterday, so Lizze and I could get away and get Fit4Autism.  :-)

That was honestly a victory, in and of itself.

However, the main reason I’m celebrating is because the boys actually got along and even built this little town out of blocks.

They worked together and had a great time.  Anytime there’s no bloodshed, that is a victory as far as I’m concerned.  :-)

#Autism Awareness Month Suggestions: Take care of yourself

As parents, we play a vital role in the life of our children. As special needs parents, that even more true. The reality is that in some cases, our kids will need us for as long as we can physically be here.

One of my worst fears is the day that I’m no longer here to take care of my kids.

One of the things I’m doing instead of allowing that fear to take over is embrace it. I embrace that fear and let it drive me to take better care of myself.  I use that fear to motivate me into making better life decisions.

It’s so incredibly easy to get lost in the everyday life of special needs parenting.  We do and do for our kids, often times at great expense to our own wellbeing.

When I was a firefighter and paramedic, one of the very first things we were taught was that the safety of myself and my partner must always come first. That may seem counterintuitive but it’s absolutely correct.

If I rolled up on the scene of an auto accident and put myself or my partner in harms way and something happens to us, not only are there more injuries to worry about but how can I help anyone if I’m hurt myself?

The same holds true with special needs parenting.

If you don’t take care of yourself, Who will be here to take care of your kids? It’s a sobering thought but one that must be taken seriously.

As part of Autism Awareness Month, I will be encouraging parents to do their best to make time for themselves. Take time to de-stress, watch what you eat and exercise.

Having said that, I’ll be leading by example and doing the same thing.  I will also be sharing what I do and any progress I make.

Here is what I managed to pull off today. I took Lizze to the track and we were able to squeeze in 1.5 miles before picking up the boys.

Every little bit, adds up over time.

#Autism Awareness Month Suggestions: Diet

Autism Awareness Month doesn’t have to be just for the general public. There are many things that we need to focus on, including ourselves and our health. This April, take an inventory of your own personal health and figure out small ways that you can improve upon it. One of the things I’m working in is my diet. I’m eating oatmeal and my fruit and veggie smoothies. For breakfast I have egg whites, whole grain toast with smart balance peanut butter, plain yogurt and blue berries.

Welcome to my nightmarish fear

We got report cards for the 3rd quarter in the mail today.  Elliott got straight A’s once again and we are super duper proud of him.

Gavin did awesome as well,  however he dropped a full letter in most of his classes.  He went from straight A’s to mostly B’s. This is a concern because I don’t know why this is.

image

We aren’t upset with Gavin at all but we are worried that this may be part of cognitive regression that he’s experiencing.  Slipping grades across the board are definitely a cause for concern and warrant a meeting with his teachers.

To be honest, I’m really trying not to overreact because this is a huge fear of mine.

I’m so worried that Gavin is slowly slipping away. We have been noticing things that lead us to believe he is continuing to regress. He’s having problems remembering things and he’s becoming more simple. I don’t know how else to describe what we’re seeing.

Gavin is becoming more and more infantile.  Does that makes sense?

Welcome to the nightmarish fear I live with, every single day of my life. Thus is the burden I carry as a special needs parent.
